WHAT IS THE VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK?

The CHARITY WALK is a statewide event that occurs simultaneously on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Molokai and Kauai each year.  Now in its 32nd year, the Charity Walk is one of the largest single-day fundraising events by a non-profit organization in the State of Hawaii. Since its inception in 1978, over $20 million has been raised, benefiting hundreds of local charities throughout the State.

 

Last year, more than 10,000 walkers statewide raised over $1 million to benefit 190+ local charitable organizations.  On Maui, more than 1,200 participants raised $312,000, benefiting 80+ Maui County charities. All funds raised on Maui, stays in Maui County. The theme for this year’s event is “A Tradition of Kokua.”

 

WHEN IS THE CHARITY WALK ON MAUI?

SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2010 at 7:00 am

(Registration & Pre-Walk Activities begin at 6:30 am)

(NOTE: Due to security concerns, all walkers must be on the route by 7:30 am.)

 

WHO CAN WALK?

ANYBODY CAN! You do not have to be a hotel employee, member of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, or part of the visitor industry to participate. Everyone is invited! Invite your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, clients, schools, clubs, visitors/tourists ... to join us in a fun-filled morning of good food, fabulous entertainment, amazing prizes and some great exercise to help raise funds for Maui County local charities.

 

WHAT IS THE COST TO PARTICIPATE?

All walkers are required to collect a MINIMUM of $35 (those under 18 years of age must collect a minimum of $25 - regardless of age) in donations to participate in the VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK. Note that ALL participants under 18 years of age including infants must submit an original completed walker form with the minimum $25.

 

Walker forms will be available in late March/early April at the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s office.  In addition, kick-off events will be held throughout the island where forms and event posters will be distributed.  Contact MHLA at 244-8625 for additional information.

 

WHAT IS THE CHARITY WALK ROUTE?

Maui’s 5K VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK begins at War Memorial Soccer Field, proceeds up Kanaloa Avenue and through Keopuolani Park to Wahine Pio Drive (fronting the Old Maui Community College Dorms), continues past Maui Community College on Ka‘ahumanu Avenue, crosses the street at the main entrance of  Queen Ka‘ahumanu Shopping Center, turns right on Lono Ave and another right on to West Kamehameha Avenue, crosses and turns right on Kane Street (at Maui Electric), and turns left on to Ka‘ahumanu Avenue and ends back at the War Memorial Soccer Field.


There are 9 checkpoints throughout the course offering refreshments to walkers. Checkpoint sponsors include:

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE WALK?

As a Mahalo to all those who finish the walk (while supplies last), a small, free gift will be provided to walkers who present their validated ROUTE CARDS at the finish line. 
 

At the end of the walk, qualified walkers will be treated to fabulous food prepared by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association property members:

  • Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa – Scrambled eggs, steamed rice and sausage
  • Makena Beach & Golf Resort – Chili and rice
  • Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club – Fruit smoothies and whole & cut fruit
  • Royal Lahaina Resort – Waffles
  • Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa – Chow fun
  • The Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas – Portuguese bean soup, sweet bread and hot dog


Featured Entertainment includes:

  • Cirque Polynesia
  • Tihati Productions’ Drums of the Pacific.

 

In addition to the great food and entertainment, a Keiki Zone, health screenings and fabulous door prizes will be available to participating walkers.

 

WHERE DO THE MONIES GO???

Last year, over 190 local charitable organizations throughout the State received monies from the Visitor Industry Charity Walk.  The range of services of these recipients touches many residents’ lives from children to the elderly, from athletic organizations to service-related agencies; from health to housing. It is the Charity Walk’s goal to impact many lives by supporting a variety of charitable organizations that provide valuable services, and to ultimately improve our community. All funds raised on Maui stays in Maui County to benefit the Maui community.  In Maui County, the following charities received funding from the 2009 VICW:

CHARITY WALK T-SHIRTS

 

“Official” Visitor Industry Charity Walk t-shirts with this year’s logo as shown above are available for order.  Organizations have the option of printing their logos on the “official” t-shirts. Information on ordering shirts is listed below.

 

T-SHIRT CONTEST

Design your organization’s own Charity Walk T-shirt and enter the t-shirt Contest. The contest is open to all! Shirts will be judged on originality, use of the Charity Walk slipper logo, use of the event theme and overall appearance. To enter, shirts must be received no later than 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2010.  Entries must be submitted BEFORE the start of the walk!!

 

ORDERING T-SHIRTS

All T-shirts may be ordered directly from the printer – POI POUNDER HAWAII. The order form is attached. Please note that Maui Hotel & Lodging Association will NOT have shirts available for purchase. The ordering and pick up/delivery of the Charity Walk Shirts needs to be coordinated directly with:

Shirts are offered in white; adult sizes Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), Extra Large (XL), Extra Extra Large (XXL), and Extra Extra Extra Large (XXXL). Cost per T-shirt is $2.50 (tax is included in the price). A 50% deposit is needed on ALL orders. Please note if you would like to put your company’s logo on the shirt or if you are interested in ordering the shirt in a different color, size (i.e., Children/Youth) or style (i.e. Tank), you must contact Brian Ito at Poi Pounder Hawaii directly for a price quote. Deadline to order is: April 21, 2010.
