| King Kamehameha III School receives $31,000 donation
Contributions from Maui hotels will help school retain classrooms, teacher offices
Wailuku, Maui– King Kamehameha III School received $31,000 in donations from the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association (MHLA) and its members to purchase a modular trailer being used for classrooms and teacher’s offices.
The monies came after MHLA Executive Director Leimamo Lind offered $10,000 from the association, and then sent out a plea to the association’s West Maui properties for the balance. An additional $10,000 came in from the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, $7000 from Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, $2000 from the Mauian Hotel, and $1000 each from Classic Resorts Maui and ResortQuest Maui Properties.
“I can’t express how appreciative we are of this tremendous donation,” said Lindsay Ball, principal of King Kamehameha III School. “Although the DOE is working on both short-term and long-term solutions to our overcrowding (situation), being able to keep this trailer will be a big help to us now.”
Up until now, the school had been leasing the trailer, but was going to lose it at the end of the school year when funding ran out. Although plans are currently underway to build portables, the trailer is needed to alleviate the existing shortage of space.
“The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association understands the importance of providing a safe and comfortable environment for the teachers and students,” said Lind. “Our schools matter greatly to our members and their fellow employees, many of who live and work and send their children to school in West Maui.” |

Maui Charity Walk seeks to beat last year’s record
Posted: April 5, 2007
A year ago, Charity Walk events in Maui County raised $338,000, exceeding the other islands in the state as well as the previous record established in 2005. 70 nonprofit organizations in Maui County were the beneficiaries of the funds raised..
This year, event organizers hope to set a new record, even if only by one dollar.
“More nonprofit organizations than ever are requesting to receive funds from the Charity Walk, and as much as possible, it would be great to help them all,” said Leimamo Lind, executive director of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, which helps organize the annual event. “The hotel industry recognizes how important this event is to the community, and we are calling upon everyone to participate, either as a walker or by making a contribution in some way. Together, we can do more.”
Themed “Songs of the Islands,” Maui County’s Charity Walk will kick off May 12 at Dole Park on Lanai, followed by Maui and Molokai on May 19.
On Maui, registration will begin at 6 a.m. at the War Memorial Soccer Field. The walk will commence at 7 a.m.
Many of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association members have also begun organizing individual Charity Walk kick-off activities in advance of the main event, or have pledged donations.
Anyone interested in participating in as a walker can pick up a registration and pledge form at:
* Maui Hotel & Lodging Association Office, 1727-B Wili Pa Loop, Wailuku, 808-244-8625. * Molokai: Gregg Fraser, 553-8284 or Larry Helm * Lanai: Nani Watanabe, 565-3240 or Thomas Burke, 565-3977
The walk route is approximately three miles long on Maui, less on Molokai and Lanai. Each walker must raise a minimum of $35 in donations ($25 for participants less than 18 years old). Walkers are treated to food, drink and first-aid checkpoints which are operated and supplied by Maui County hotels and allied members of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association. Donations of cash and items for prize giveaways are also being gratefully accepted.
Coordinated by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association under the umbrella of the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association, the Visitor Industry Charity Walk is part of a statewide fundraising effort. In 2006, the event raised more than $1 million statewide. All net proceeds from the Charity Walk stay in the county where the funds were raised.

Maui Hotel & Lodging Association donates $14,000 to community
Posted: January 31, 2007
The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association granted a total of $14,000 toward scholarships, community clean-up efforts, and an anti-drug program in Maui County.
Four scholarships of $500 each was given to students of Maui Community College’s Culinary Academy. Four $500 scholarships were also given to second-year nursing students at Maui Community College. An additional $2,000 was given to the Community Work Day program, and $8,000 to Interquest Detection Canines of Hawaii, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting drug abuse, for a new program at four Maui County schools.
“Although our organization is often associated solely with visitor accommodations, all of these endeavors -- education, quality health care, litter-free roads and drug-free schools -- are very important to the thousands of employees and families who are part of the travel industry,” said Leimamo Lind, executive director of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association. “We are happy to be able to do what we can to support our community.”
Each year, members of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association help raise charitable dollars through the organization’s benefit golf tournament and Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk. All of net proceeds from both fundraising events are granted to nonprofit entities in Maui County.
This year’s Maui Charity Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 19. The annual “Excellence in Education” benefit golf tournament will take place on August 29 at the Kaanapali Golf Courses. For more information and to obtain registration forms, call the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association office at 244-8625.
